Get Involved: SGSAH 10 Year Anniversary Research Showcase

In this blog, find out how you can get involved with SGSAH’s 10 year anniversary celebrations coming up in autumn this year, with the chance to showcase your research.

2014 was a different time. The world didn’t yet know how to “Shake it Off” a la Taylor Swift, the UK was still part of the EU, and PhD students in Scotland were left adrift. Yes, ten years ago, we didn’t have SGSAH.

SGSAH, aka the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities, was set up in the autumn of 2014. The world’s first national graduate school in the Arts and Humanities, SGSAH has supported thousands of students across Scotland with funding, training, and opportunities since.

And, naturally, to celebrate their ten year anniversary, SGSAH have rustled up even more opportunities and support for Scottish research students in the Arts and Humanities, and they need you to get involved.

On Thursday 3 October, as part of the anniversary celebrations, SGSAH are hosting a number of mini-exhibits to showcase PhD researchers’ work. Whose work in particular, you ask? Well, yours!

The invitation is open for any doctoral researcher or SGSAH alumnus to showcase their work. As long as you’re either a SGSAH alum or you’re a current PhD researcher at a SGSAH member HEI (check the list of them here), you can apply for your work to be featured in the showcase.

Six exhibitors will be selected by a panel of PhD researchers from SGSAH’s Doctoral Research Committee (find out more about their work here). The exhibitors will have up to £1,000 covered for any materials directly required to showcase their research — think posters, models, 3D maps, VR supplies, musical performances, ‘zines, and more! — so don’t worry about the cost of colour printing.

Static displays of research are welcome (find some top tips on displaying your research here), as are proposals for performances. However you think your research is best displayed, SGSAH will help you figure out the practicalities!

The exhibition space itself is also pretty cool. The anniversary party will be taking over SWG3 in Glasgow, with their TV Studio space being turned into the showcase exhibition. For a sneak peak of the venue, check out SWG3’s website here.

If you’re interested in showcasing your work as part of the celebrations, you can find out all of the practical details on SGSAH’s main website here. If you’ve already got a vision of how your research can be displayed, you can skip straight to the application form here, just make sure you get it sent in before the deadline on Friday 2 August!

Keep your eyes peeled for more information about the anniversary event and other upcoming opportunities from SGSAH through their mailing list or their social media. Find them on Twitter/X here, and Instagram here.
